Warrane Wins Sports Shield

Warrane has taken out the 2010 UNSW Inter-College Sports Shield after victory in the water polo tournament on Saturday.

The win came as a dramatic climax to the year in sport. On Wednesday October 6th Warrane clinched the Basketball trophy with a thrilling 52-51 win against Basser College in extra time. The win put Warrane within a few points of Basser, and victory in the water polo put Warrane in front.

“It was heart-stopping” said Warrane sports director and president of the Inter-College Sports Association, Oliver Perrottet. “Traditionally we haven’t done very well in water polo but we happened to have a few really good players this year. And the whole team lifted to the occasion.”

Fellow sports director Tom Wall responded more phlegmatically. “I knew we would win” he said.

When the final whistle blew on Saturday scores of jubilant Warrane supporters jumped (fully-clothed) into the pool in solidarity with the players. One resident had to be rescued as he did not know how to swim.

Highlights of the year in sport included:

  • 1st place in Rugby Union
  • 1st place in Tennis
  • 1st place in Basketball
  • 1st place in Water Polo
  • Equal 1st place in AFL
  • 2nd place in Soccer
  • 2nd place in Cross-country (1st place in the race to Warrane resident Robert Joseph).

Incoming sports directors Rohan Stocker and Russell Martin have said they are determined to repeat the performance in 2011.
