Warrane takes out Intercollege Sports Shield for second year in a row

2013 sporting victory

For the second year in a row, Warrane took out the UNSW Intercollege Sports Shield after winning most of the main sporting events during the year.

Urged on by an enthusiastic band of College supporters, Warrane was placed first in Tennis, Rugby, Soccer, Waterpolo, Touch Football and Cross Country.

The College was placed second in Cricket, AFL and Rugby League and third in Hockey.

According to Andrew Santucci, who was joint Sports Director with Tom Ryan, the thing that cemented Warrane’s dominance in 2013 was the victory of its Rugby team.

“It was the second straight season of the College Rugby team being undefeated and because that is one of the bigger sports it spurred everyone on,” Andrew said.

“The other standout sport was soccer – our team really performed well.”

Warrane’s Sportsman of the Year was James Watson who not only took part in almost every sport, but excelled in most of them.

“He was in just about everything, from Rugby to Netball and Hockey,” Andrew said. “He is a really talented sportsman and played a vital role in each one.”

James’s brother, Joseph, also made a strong contribution, particularly as Captain of the Rugby team, playing in the back line alongside James.

“Joe has had plenty of experience and everyone in the Rugby team looks to him,” Andrew said.
