AMP CEO on living with passion

The importance of living with passion – AMP CEO Francesco De Ferrari

When AMP Limited Chief Executive Officer Francesco De Ferrai visited Warrane College for dinner earlier this year, he came bearing a wide array of advice for the young students.

De Ferrari, who is a year into his role leading iconic Australian brand AMP, has more than two decades’ experience in the wealth management industry, including private banking and management consulting. His diverse professional background has seen him work for Nestle, McKinsey and Credit Suisse, as well as establishing and running a number of businesses.

“Try to live your life with passion and not with fear,” he said. “I’ve always been very enthusiastic; whenever an opportunity came I jumped on it.”

For De Ferrari, the key to success is focussing on a big problem, not its solution.

“One of the big things in society today is that we need to learn to celebrate failures. I think the fear of making mistakes is something that really holds people back. And it shouldn’t.”

His advice for the students about the stage of life they are in now was equally as sage: “University is a great time. It’s a fantastic opportunity for you to ask, and spend time asking the big scary questions of life… start asking yourself now.”

In closing, De Ferrari urged the students to use their skills to make the world a better place.

“I think single individuals today can move mountains, the way technology allows global reach, so make sure you don’t forget that life is just as much about giving as it is about taking,” he said.

“First, learn as much as possible, and then choose a company that has the right culture and the right values.”
