Professorial appointments for College Master

The Master of Warrane, Dr Gerald Fogarty, has been appointed Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Notre Dame, Sydney.

The appointments in 2013 came during a busy year for Professor Fogarty, a year during which he completed and was awarded his PhD on “Recent Advances in the Radiotherapy of Skin Cancer”. The thesis, completed over a 12-year period on a part-time basis, was mostly centred on work he completed both in the laboratory and in the clinic at Australia’s largest cancer centre, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, based in Melbourne.

The graduation ceremony in October was held during the second year of Gerald’s tenure as College Master. During 2013 Gerald was invited to speak at a number of conferences, including an international conference in Hamburg on melanoma. The conference was followed by a lecture tour around Europe with other specialists from the Melanoma Institute of Australia.

Over the past two years, Professor Fogarty has published 14 papers in international journals and continues to be the Director of the Radiotherapy Centre at The Mater Sydney Hospital – the leading site in Australia for volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), a new type of “external beam radiotherapy” for cancer.

The Mater Hospital is also now a recognised stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) site, another technique that Gerald pioneered in 2013.
