Master Retires

After a decade at the helm Emeritus Professor Tony Shannon AM has decided to step down from his role as Master of Warrane College.

Professor Shannon was associated with the College well before he was appointed Master in 2000. Over the past 10 years the College has strengthened its public profile. Professor Shannon has hosted hundreds of Wednesday night guests at Warrane from a variety of backgrounds. He has also instituted the tradition of Faculty Dinners, with guests from various professional fields addressing aspiring students in that field.

Professor Shannon oversaw the refurbishment of the College building, which was officially re-opened by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO in 2009. He also established the College as an Institutional Member of the College of Teachers, London. Thanks to his work students of Warrane and others are now able to complete a Certificate or Diploma of Educational Studies through the College of Teachers.

All the while he has played an invaluable role in mentoring and advising the residents of the College and has been a major supporter of College sport and other events. He has also managed to continue publishing prolifically in his field of pure mathematics and to act as a consultant for other educational bodies. He plans to continue in these roles in the immediate future

In a cocktail event hosted by the College to farewell Professor Shannon on Friday 25 February 2011, Emeritus Professor David Barker AM praised the outgoing Master’s hospitality and his modesty. “I am sure everyone here, particularly the students and alumni, would like to thank [Tony] on their behalf for affording them the opportunity to enjoy the friendship and support which they have always enjoyed during their time at Warrane.”
