After 13 years as Master of Warrane College, and an accumulative 35 years in residence in a range of capacities, Professor Gerald Fogarty has announced his retirement.

“I have been privileged to have been in this role. I feel that the time is ripe to leave to allow fresh eyes and a new vision to direct the College,” he said.

“The role of Master is to establish, grow and protect the founding charism of the College.

“I have enjoyed continuing that tradition and to see Warrane extending its formative and family environment onto the UNSW campus and into broader society.

“I have learnt so much here and it has been a real pleasure to be the Master of Warrane."

Chair of the College Council and Education Development Association (EDA) Board Member David Bolton paid tribute to Professor Fogarty’s longevity and commitment to the college.

“Our sincere thanks go to him for his years of self-giving and sacrifice,” he said.

“He has played an important role in making Warrane what it is today – one of the outstanding University Colleges in Australia."

Professor Fogarty has worked full-time as an oncologist in Sydney throughout his time as Master, and has also played a very hands-on role in the college after work and on weekends.

He is Warrane’s fourth Master, following from Dr Joseph Martins, Professor Chris French, and Professor Tony Shannon AM.

EDA Chair Mr Peter Saccasan said Professor Fogarty has been an integral part of Warrane.

“He has become a big part of the Warrane story, and this on top of his success in his own professional field of radiation oncology,” he said.

“We wish Gerald all the best for the future and will have more to say in the coming weeks."

EDA will now appoint a new Master in time for the 2025 academic year.

A farewell formal dinner will be held in Professor Fogarty’s honour on Wednesday 13 November.
