FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Warrane offer?

Warrane College offers accommodation to students at UNSW. Warrane is a residential college affiliated with and on the campus of UNSW Sydney.

Are academic tutors available?

High-achieving residents are named Academic Tutors and provide weekly tutorials for a range of subjects across most degrees. They are also available for individual consultation, as long as students have attended the weekly plenary tutorial session.

Can I make my own meals?

Meals are fully catered for at College, so there is no need to cook your own meals. Each floor has a small kitchenette with a kettle and microwave for student to heat up their own snacks or purchased food.

What is the meal system?

We provide 3 meals a day, 7 days a week. In the event you will miss a meal there is a system in place to ensure you can have it earlier/later as needed. We also facilitate special diets, but only for medical or religious reasons.

What is the curfew?

As a detail of courtesy towards the residential tutor on duty, residents are asked to be back by 12.00am between Sunday and Wednesday; the time to be back between Thursday and Saturday is 2.00am. We have common sense: if you have a good reason to be back later, that can be arranged.

Can I stay during breaks/summer?

Warrane’s standard contract is a 44-week arrangement. The short breaks in May and August between terms are included, but residents may return home if they wish. At the end of the year, residents are given some days to vacate after the end of exams, but must vacate for the summer – usually by mid-December. Residents returning for the following year may leave items in their locker – almost a cubic metre of space.

What are the references required?

You need two references. The first one is a character reference, which is written by someone who knows you rather well (outside of your family) and comments on your general traits and personality. The second is an academic reference, which should be written by a teacher or professor. This reference should highlight some of your academic highlights and comment on your suitability to study at a tertiary level.

Do I need to come in for an interview?

Applying for accommodation at Warrane College UNSW involves doing an interview with a staff member of the College. The purpose of the interview is twofold, to give the applicant an opportunity to briefly experience the environment of the College and for us to assess the applicant’s suitability for residence. Interviewing staff consider the applicant’s academic performance, willingness to participate in collegial life and openness to the aims and ethos of the College. Online interviews can be conducted for applicants from interstate or rural / regional areas as well as international students, however an in-person interview is recommended and preferred.

When will I find out if I am being offered a place?

Following a successful interview, you will be notified by email and will receive a contract which must be signed and returned along with payment of the fee-in-advance. This holds the room for you, and the balance is paid either before or on arrival at the College.

What if I do not get an offer to UNSW?

If you have accepted a place at Warrane and do not receive an offer for UNSW you will receive a full refund of any payments you have made to book your room.
