The Warrane Lecture 2017: Individual Rights, National Security and the Role of Government in the Global Era

Michael L’Estrange AO is the Deputy Chancellor of the University of Notre Dame Australia.
The father of five boys is also on the Boards of Rio Tinto and Qantas, and has extensive
experience in public policy, foreign affairs and international trade.
L’Estrange was educated at St. Aloysius College at Milson’s Point and Sydney University.
Later, he studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar (1976-79) and at Georgetown
University and the University of California, Berkeley as a Harkness Fellow (1987-89).
In 1981 he joined the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and was later Cabinet
Secretary (1996-2000), High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (2000-05) and Secretary
of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (2005-09). From 2009 to 2016, he was
Professor of National Security at the Australian National University.
