Military ethicist, Matt Beard - to speak at Warrane

Wednesday 21 September 2016

Matthew Beard mightn’t yet be 30 but he’d be Dr Matthew Beard to you, thanks to his PhD in military ethics. The Sydney-based moral philosopher works at The Ethics Centre, which is an independent not-for-profit that helps to navigate complex ethical issues. He’s also Warrane’s guest for the night of 21 September 2016.

Don’t be scared off if you don’t like philosophy, because neither did he initially – Matthew switched his bachelor’s degree from law to philosophy when studying at the University of Notre Dame, before going on to complete his honours and PhD.

Matthew has published a number of papers and books on topics including moral injury and post-traumatic stress disorder, cyberwar, torture and medical ethics. He also appears regularly in the media (including The Guardian, ABC, Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Daily Telegraph) to discuss ethical issues from vampires to anti-vaccination; and is a columnist with The Conversation.
